The Origins of Thai Massage

Sep 22, 2023

Over the years, Thai bodywork has become a very popular treatment method that involves a unique and engaging range of care options. However, the origins of this treatment go way back. According to Medical News Today, Thai bodywork likely came into being around 2,500 to 7,000 years ago. Here’s what to know about the history of this unique therapy option and how it was saved after being nearly lost forever due to a serious war.

The Origins of This Therapy

The earliest known mention of this massage technique we currently know of took place 2,500 years ago, according to Cornell University. According to written legend, this method was created by Jivaka Kombarabhacca or Shivago Kimpra, the individual credited as the originator of traditional Thai medicine. Born in India, he not only provided a unique source of medical support but also a role in Buddhist scripture. Kimpra, it's said, likely converted to Buddhism in part to help people within this faith with his medical expertise. His massage technique was used by many others, often paired with various techniques and preparation methods to boost its effectiveness as a care option.

Spreading Elsewhere

Unfortunately, the full history of Thai bodywork is lost to time because of the Burmese-Siamese War of 1767, according to the National Institute of Health. During an attack in this war, several inscribed stone tablets were destroyed, and ancient history was lost forever. Sadly, this means that the full history of this technique may never be fully known, though it remains very popular in many parts of the world.

Typical bodywork includes not just hands-on massage treatments but energy work that helps to balance your body and your overall mood and health. It became particularly popular after World War II, as it spread heavily throughout the world and hit America in the late 1980s, according to the National Institute of Health. From there, it’s become even more popular and widely spread throughout many parts of the world.
